22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Yemọja, Reimagined

This work is an Afro-surrealist approach to my childhood in my mother's hair salon. Relying on the dreams of my youth, I reimagine West African orishas and present them as hair goddesses. Each photo features a 13-foot wig braided collaboratively between myself, and my family/friends. Yemọja is a female Yoruba Orisha of the sea/fishes. She is the protector of women and children.
