22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Winged Colonizer

Portrait of a winged ant; These insects are, as most know, really efficient in building colonies, but how do they get everywhere? Flying, that is the main purpose of ants with wings, fly away and start new colonies, after which they lose the wings. Found this one just outside my house, they are everywhere just before and during the rainy season in the Sonoran Desert.
