22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Vixen and Rhododendron

For several years now, foxes have been living and breeding in the heart of Montreal’s Botanical Garden. Every spring, a mother Red Fox gives birth to a litter of kits, usually 3 to 5, as we’ve observed. It’s one of the most incredible moments when the vixen leaves the den to hunt, while the little ones, full of curiosity, venture outside to explore, play, and watch her return. Meanwhile, the Rhododendrons in the Garden are in full bloom, painting the background of our photos with vibrant shades of white, pink, and purple. And here she is—Mama Fox, back from her hunting rounds. Tired and marked by the day’s struggles, yet she is supremely beautiful in her rich red coat.
