20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Union Station On A Summer Day

This is the backside of the historic Union Station. It serves as an important travel hub for light-rail, traditional rail, and buses. This photo was taken during an outing to elsewhere in NW Portland. I decided to use the trip to get photos of historic places for a contest that didn't happen this year. Here, you can see the back side of the station building, some of the rail yard, and the platform. Amtrak trains pass through regularly, along with freight trains. Union Station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (ID:#75001595). It's one of several places on the NRHP in NW Portland. Union Station is part of a cluster that includes the Burnside and Steel Bridges and the Albers Brothers Milling Company.
