22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Turtle in the spring

Florida stands as a haven for turtle species diversity, boasting over 30 native species, most of which are freshwater turtles. Despite their predominantly aquatic habitat, these turtles exhibit a dual existence, spending considerable time submerged while resting or foraging. It's crucial to recognize that, although predominantly aquatic, freshwater turtles, like their marine counterparts, are air-breathing reptiles. This shared trait allows both freshwater and sea turtles to masterfully hold their breath, navigating the depths for extended periods while occasionally surfacing to replenish their air supply.
