18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Tree Burst
With all the wildfires in the news lately, I wanted to capture the regrowth after the fires. We went through our own wildfire in 2018. Forty-five structures were burned. The fire came to our property line, and we stayed to fight it as we watched the terrifying flames blaze on the horizon. This photo was taken of the smoke haze and sun bursting through the trees shining on this lonely small pine, a survivor of the devastating fires.
