22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
The Olive Trees' Garrison

Following the event of illegitimate expropriation of the land by Terna Spa and the cutting of ancient olive trees and junipers by Terna's workers, people occupied the ground, re-planting many olive trees and other protected plants, in order to pacifically try to stop the works. They started the The Olive Trees' Garrison, building tiny wooden houses and structures to camp and look after the place 24/7. The islanders are worried for the irretrievable damages that this will create to their lands, Nature and economy. They fear that instead of clean, renewable energy the island will have to pay high environmental damages because of local and national political mismanagement of the projects.
