22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
The Oldest Church

Known as the oldest church in the continental United States, the San Miguel Chapel is believed to have been built in 1610. The structure has served many purposes to the people of Santa Fe throughout its long life. The San Jóse bell, at 780 pounds, sits at the rear of the church. This historic site is active today, where community members gather and visitors learn its story.
