The mummy soup

Project leader dr Maria Nilsson and two members of the Gebel el Silsila survey team slowly and carefully sift through the rather repulsive mix of warm saltwater, sand, Nile silt and dissolved human remains. The appx 3400 year old crypt was discovered five meters below the sandstone bedrock surface in Gebel el Silsila, Egypt. Here, the world´s largest ancient quarry is being surveyed by Maria, her husband John Ward and an international team of experts. In the crypt pictured, around 100 humans were buried thousands of years ago.
