21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The Mating Game

We have a beautiful Rookery in Charleston where multiple wading birds nest every year. Among them are several Great Blue Heron pairs and the first pair to arrive gets the coveted Stick Tree as its known locally. They spend several weeks restoring the previous years nest in preparation for the egg laying and hatching of the chicks. The male spends his time collecting the sticks while the female either approves or rejects them and if accepted she places them in the nest. It is most definitely a team effort
