22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
The Immovable Ladder

The so-called "Immovable Ladder" under the window of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre remained in the same location at least since the 18th century, due to the Status Quo - an understanding among six Christian churches regarding shared religious sites in Jerusalem and Bethlehem. During the 2024 Holy Fire ceremonies, a monk used the ladder to get an ideal vantage point for photographing the ceremony below.
