21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The Highlands

Kerlingarfjöll Mountains, located in the heart of Iceland's highlands, are a geothermal wonderland and a true treat for nature enthusiasts. These rugged peaks, characterized by their rusty red and orange hues, rise dramatically against the stark Icelandic landscape. Kerlingarfjöll range has numerous hot springs and steaming vents, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The contrast between the snow-capped summits and the geothermal activity below is nothing short of spectacular. The place offers limitless composition opportunities but you need to spend some time there to get your eyes used to this. There was no colourful sunset or sunrise during my visit but I had this lovely, steel-coloured sky instead which was brilliantly contrasting with the surrendering landscape.
