For almost half a century, my brothers and I have visited Cabo Mondego, located in the Lusitanian Basin and surrounded by the Serra da Boa Viagem. On these visits, whether through school activities, with the Scout group or on walks, we learned to admire the importance of Middle Jurassic fossils. Over the last 200 years, in the heart of the Cape, there has been a heavy industry of coal, lime, cement and a quarry. Despite this, in 2007, Cabo Mondego was classified as a Natural Monument, thus recognizing a geological area of 76 hectares, unique in Portugal and of global importance. The industrial complex was closed on March 15, 2013. However, its buildings, significant for industrial archeology, remained there, deteriorating, in total oblivion. In September 2022, CMFF reached an agreement with Inter-Cement for the purchase of the facilities and surrounding area, but it was not completed for political reasons, leaving Cabo Mondego, once again, forgotten, postponing its ancestral connection between Land and Sea, between Nature and Humanity. This project represents, first of all, an extraordinary hope, the guiding light of the Cabo lighthouse, so that the competent entities (and all of us) reflect and invest in preserving the environment.
