The fire and life of Surma
in the remote hills of the Omo Valley, two Surma boys gather after dark to burn dry wood. As the flames dance among the dry wood, life continues nearby. The Surma rely on pastoralism and agriculture: cattle graze in the green valleys, and corn, millet and vegetables are grown on the slopes. Known for their craftsmanship, including woodworking and weaving, fire, as well as providing heat and light, is a central element in the culture, symbolizing the Surma's resilience and connection to their land, being essential to pastoralism, agriculture and daily activities.
