22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The End of Life

My son owns a market and they provide butchering services for the hunters who bring their deer in. Here, (in West Virginia, USA) we have a deer season and deer hunting culls a lot of the herds. This butchering process is new to me and I was interested. When the deer was ready for skinning, I went back to watch (with camera of course) and documented the process. The light is the light provided (none added) and the process was never interrupted by me giving directions. I just observed the job as it was done and documented.
