22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The City Octopus

A tidepool is an intricate space created during every low tide. While this confined environment might seem dangerous from a marine animal's perspective, some species have adapted to thrive in these harsh conditions. Even the coastline of one of the world's most densely populated cities is no exception. Here, an unidentified octopus species is seen dwelling on the coastline of Mumbai despite all the pollution.
