13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
the California Western Railroad

Built in the 1880s for logging Redwoods, the California Western Railroad runs along the Noyo River in Mendocino County, California, The Train is Known as the "Skunk Train" because it was said by the old time loggers "you can smell that train coming before you can see it". Today the trains no longer carry logs to a mill but it takes tourist out to see the Coastal Redwood Trees along the Noyo River Valley from ether Fort Bragg, or Willits, Ca.
