21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Teton Splendor
Storms rollicking through Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone made visiting the parks difficult but created a spectacular show as arcing bolts of lightning pounded the Teton range. This was a thirty-second exposure taken from the deck at the Jackson Lake Lodge. The B&W format emphasizes the contrast between dark and light, and simplifies and freezes a chaotic these chaotic and powerful forces of nature. I was, of course, greatly inspired by Ansel Adams so when I had an opportunity to visit some of America's great national parks out west I wanted to emulate and pay homage to the B&W format and the timeless nature of these natural wonders.
