20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Sunning Anhinga

Anhingas, or snake birds, swim under water to capture their prey then sun on structures or the shore to dry off. This is the north shore of Lake Apopka. The birds are recovering after several offenses by humans over the last century and half. Hunting and destruction by farming and poisons and now by construction eliminating their territory has destroyed their colonies over and over again.
