20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Summer in the Palm of Your Hand
I took this image while on a road trip to Maine. My friend and I stopped at a farm in Hudson Valley, New York which had rows and rows of U-Pick orchards. It was near the end of the summer so almost everything was picked over. But the bees were going crazy over all the fallen fruit left from past pickers. This juicy, half eaten peach seemed to be the favorite. My friend, who works on a farm himself, didn't hesitate to pick it up and get a closer look at the glistening fruit with the beautiful bees buzzing around. It was then that I captured this quintessential, American summertime moment.
