The Arkestra was founded 72 years ago by the AfroFuturist jazz composer, pianist, arranger, philosopher Sun Ra. Ra left the planet in 1993, but the Arkestra continues to play his wide ranging compositions under the leadership of long time band member and centenarian Marshall Allen. Sun Ra's "space is the place" mantra was a signal to those who are oppressed to understand that freedom was within their minds, accessed by embracing the space ways.
