22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World

The image juxtaposes trees, at 6,000 feet elevation, against stars. The red bark of the tree trunks is caused by passing car tail lights and the lighter green sky is from light pollution from Yakima Valley, to the east of Mt. Rainier.
