22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Stampede
Watching a large wildebeest crossing is one of the most impressive animal experiences in the world. Each year, wildebeest circles the grasslands of Central Africa, following available food sources. To feel the power and energy of hundreds of thousands of animals racing toward you across a river in a panic to avoid crocodiles is so intense. My guide positioned us on the opposite bank as soon as the animal freight train took off across the river. Once one goes, they all go. For about 20 minutes, this continued. The power of a stampede.
