22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Sparrow kills weaver

I realized there were some interesting bird interactions going on amongst the birds in my backyard, so I set out to capture some of interaction. The ideal spot to capture the action was under a tree, and the spot was lit by the late afternoon sunlight. The background was an open space underneath a shadowed bush, causing the background to fall into darkness. In this image, a male Cape Sparrow is attacking a male Southern masked weaver, in order to establish domination on the branch.
