22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Sorry for you grasshupper
I encountered serpentine daily in the savannah in the Reserve Masai Mara Kenya but did not always have time to stop and observe them for a long time. That morning, we spent time with 2 serpentines hoping to see them catch a snake. They had a good lunch with spiders, insects and this poor grasshopper. They can walk up to 30 km per day to find prey. This morning they stayed in the same environment which seemed to have lots of interesting insects for them. These birds are magnificent to watch hitting the ground to kill or knock out their prey then throwing it into the air, catching it and swallowing it in one gulp. The beauty of nature.
