Big Boy 4014 The Big Boy 4014 is a steam locomotive owned and operated by the Union Pacific (UP) as part of its heritage fleet. It was built in 1941 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) at its Schenectady Locomotive Works and was assigned to haul heavy freight trains in the Wasatch mountain range. After 1 million miles, it was retired in 1961. It was reacquired by Union Pacific in 2013 and underwent a multi-year restoration process at its steam shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming. No. 4014 is the only Big Boy in operation today and was restored in time to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad’s completion. Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 is the product of another age, another time, a time seemingly so far removed from this century that it seems unlikely that this steam locomotive could run the rails again. But in 2019, it returned to the rails and has thousands of miles under its belt. It is a must see for history buffs when it goes on tour. This gentle giant will arrest your soul and melt your heart with a commanding presence you won’t forget.
