Mountains occupy over 64% of the total land of Nepal where mules are the primary source of transportation of people and goods. Mules are able to navigate steep, narrow trails and treacherous mountain terrain that vehicles cannot. Mules are used to transport people, goods, food, medicine, and building materials, including in this picture: gas cannisters. However, mules in Nepal face a number of welfare issues including lack of medical support and poor understanding of animal welfare.
