22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
See-through Saguaro

What if you could see through a healthy saguaro cactus? Beneath the saguaro’s smooth green exterior is a woody skeleton composed of 12 to 24 cylindrical rods that provide structure and elasticity. These bare skeletons are seen still standing throughout the desert as reminders of once-healthy cactuses.
