22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Satin bowerbirds
Satin bowerbirds are Australian birds. Males (like the bird on the left in this photo) build specialised stick structures, called bowers, and they decorate the area with blue and sometimes yellow objects. These objects may be natural, but in urban settings are often plastic. Females (like the other bird in this photo) visit these bowers, and based on their inspections choose which male they will mate with. In this photo the male is picking up one of his blue objects and striking a dramatic pose, hoping to impress the female.
