22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Sailing the far flung corners of the world

Almost beyond reach unless you have a boat! Deception island, once an outpost for the whalers but now a curiosity for the adventurous who wish to see Antarctica. Why ‘deception’ ? as it turns out the island is a huge volcanoe and still active. However the centre of the volcanoe disappeared and is now a huge flooded caldera and massive safe haven for any boat that visits The only entrance is through Neptunes bellows, a gap of about 500m
