Sacred Herds in Peril: The Alpaca Farmer’s Fight for Survival

Standing proudly, this Peruvian alpaca farmer is surrounded by her alpacas. In Inca times, the alpaca was a sacred gift to the gods, signifying its deep cultural importance. Today, alpaca farming faces multiple challenges, from climate change forcing alpaqueros to move higher into the Andes in search of suitable grazing land, to the threats posed by intensive mining, which can deplete water sources and degrade the land. Despite these mounting pressures, the resilience of these farmers shines through as they continue to adapt and protect their livelihoods, preserving their ancient traditions in the face of adversity.
