Rough reefs and cormorants
This photo shows a rough reef in the Sea of Japan in Hokkaido and a cormorant there. Because Japan is a long, narrow island nation, every region has coasts with alternating sand and reefs, and gentle and sometimes violent "waves" crash on the shore. Waves are truly "everyday life". They are born in the sea by the wind, grow larger as they approach land, and are broken by the reefs. There is a beauty of "impermanence" that represents "things that change", "transience", and "view of life and death". And the rough rocks carved by the waves have "sabi", which is "the appearance of deterioration over time".
