22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Rolling farmland in the Palouse.

The Palouse is an area of rich farmland in southeast Washington state. Canola and wheat are grown here, among other crops. During harvest the fields are ablaze with the color of the mature crop, but here, in the quieter time between harvests the fields are a softer, more subtle mix of hues.
