22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Resilience

Forest fires have become a regular occurrence each summer in the Canadian Rockies. Years of fire suppression, along with climate change, have created perfect conditions for extreme wildfires. When the fires do not threaten towns or infrastructure, Parks Canada generally lets them burn as this is good for the health of the forest in the long term. This area in Kootenay National Park, British Columbia burned in 2003. While most of the burnt trees are still standing, the new green growth beneath them is a testament to the restorative powers of mother nature.
