22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Rejuvenated Lake Huron?

The zebra mussel is destroying or altering native ecosystems in eastern North America. Its impressive reproductive rate and almost complete lack of predators make it impossible to control or eradicate. However, because it filters so much water to feed on, it is bringing back crystal-clear water to many areas of the Great Lakes that were equally threatened by pollution. It makes for the most beautiful natural abstract painting, but the lesser of two evils is always evil.
