22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Reflected Roots

Shortly after sunset, the desert horizon glowed a deep orange against the foreground of a forest of saguaro cactuses. Reflecting and mirroring the photograph communicates the subtle and unseen beauty of the roots underground beneath each grand cactus. Each saguaro cactus has a short, 3-foot-long tap root and shallow horizontal roots just a few inches below the surface that spread out farther than the plant is tall. These root systems are a source of life for each cactus, absorbing the eight inches of rain this desert receives every year.
