While exploring a forest in early spring, I spotted this Red Eft near a clump of Downy Rattlesnake-plantain Orchid (Goodyera pubescens). The Red Eft is the larval phase of the Red-spotted Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) and lives a completely terrestrial existence. After transforming into the adult newt, the salamander becomes completely aquatic. Efts are not particularly bashful and can often be seen roaming the forest floor, especially on damp days. Their brilliant coloration is a warning: the amphibian is infused with a highly toxic compound called tetrodotoxin.
