REBIRTH

The Surmi population is divided into three subgroups: Chai, Tirma and Bale. I was lucky enough to spend two days in the Tirma village and attend their daily activities. In the past, Surmi were nomadic shepherds, while today their main source of livelihood is the cultivation of sorghum and corn. Periodically women and younger boys set fire to old plantations to renew the soil and prepare it for new harvest.
