Djenne, in northern Mali, is the religious and spiritual heart of the country, with the largest mud mosque in the world featuring prominently at its centre. All around, dozens of small and large Quranic schools undertake the task to educate young boys (unfortunately girls are not permitted) from the age of 4 onwards. They teach them reading and writing using verses from the Quran and also guide them religiously until older. Because Mali is incredibly poor, sometimes rooms or buildings for the lessons are not available and when this happens, lessons are held out in the street, sitting on the floor, with anyone interested invited to join. Scholars from all across Africa pass by Djenne and usually spend a few days teaching in various schools.
