18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Penguin March

Throughout the breeding season gentoo penguins will come and go from ocean to colony using the same routes leading to formation of these penguin highways as the snow melts and compresses under foot. These gentoos are heading out to sea to forage, they tend to return to the colony within the same day hopefully, if they have been successful, full of krill.
