21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Peaks of Nature
Craig, the elephant with the largest tusks in the world, blowing some dust in the air to cover his skin from the sun, with the majestic Kilimanjaro - the highest free standing mountain on earth - in the background. Both are threatened: Craig is a target for poachers, as his tusks are worth tens of thousands of dollars, while Kilimanjaro is slowly losing its ice cap due to the effects of global warming.
