22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Past and Present in Jaffa

The minaret of Mahmoudiya Mosque is reflected in a store window in Jaffa (Yafo), along with the mannequins inside. The largest mosque in Jaffa, it was built incrementally throughout the 18th and 19th centuries under Ottoman rule. Its construction began in 1730 by governor Sheikh Muhammad al-Khalili.
