Pancake ice details
Pancake ice is one of the first stages of formation of new sea ice. In the beginning of the wintertime, ice crystals formed in the first layers of the water column aggregate and create a layer of grease ice at the surface. This grease ice will then solidify to become frazil, and as the incoming swell breaks this frazil into pieces, the pieces will collide with each other and get round corners : the pancake ice.
