21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
One in a Million
This is an endangered African pangolin, one of the most trafficked animals in the world. I happened to stumble across one as I was watching a pride of sleeping lions, when out of nowhere a pangolin just walks right by. The lions briefly tried to paw at the pangolin, but to no avail given its impenetrable scales and defensive posture. Once the lions got bored, the pangolin scampered away, but for a brief moment it made eye contact with me almost as if it was begging for help from its tormentors.
