22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Nature's way of recycling

Nature’s Recycling Dead leaves and flowers, broken twigs, and branches floated on the pond creating a water grave towards the edge of the pond, in Jarry Park, Montreal. Nature’s way of fermentation was taking place. The water softened the paraphernalia. Small water bubbles burst on a floating grave dissolving the fallen bits and pieces into an orange substance that finally descended on the bed of the pond. Nature’s way of fermentation also served as plankton along the bed of the water where ducks dived into the water catching small fish and tiny water frogs that lived on the plankton.
