22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Nature's Recycling

On the surface of the pond in Montreal's Jarry Park, dead leaves, broken branches, weeds, flora and insects create a floating grave. The debris remains on the water until it starts to soften, break and descend to the bed of the pond. This is nature's breathtaking way of recycling and composting without destroying the environment. The waste at the bottom of the pond becomes food for the tiny fish and underwater creatures that live there. The water is eventually clear revealing the bottom. The park and the pond are kept clean. No waste is thrown in the pond or the park. The water is always ready for nature's next cycle.
