22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Nature’s Evergreen
This unique tree stump, found deep in the Porcupine Mountains National Park, stands tall in the shape of a perfect Christmas tree, covered in a thick layer of vibrant green moss. The forest floor around it is shaded by towering trees, giving the stump an enchanting, almost magical presence. The natural mossy covering adds texture and life, reminding us of the beauty and resilience of nature. In this quiet woodland, it felt like nature had sculpted its own version of an evergreen, a symbol of life and renewal even in the stillness of the forest.
