22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Mzungu and Curious Eyes

In Uganda, the children like to get your attention by calling out Mzungu. It means travelers or someone with white skin in Swahili. Drawn in by this unforgettable moment in time with Rutabaro, the 3-month-old infant was just like the interactions with the children we met on our travels. I was photographing the juveniles at close range with my 70 - 200 when I first saw mom through the trees, quietly eating leaves in the forest. I didn't have time to switch cameras when I saw a the ferns moving, capturing this moment of those curious eyes that melted my heart. So human like, the playful antics of a baby gorilla and mom's peaceful demeanor… it brought a sense of connection and kinship. Such a privilege to be in their presence…the warm welcome from not only the people of Uganda but the Rushegura Gorilla Group that let us be part of their world.
