Maui Releasing the Sun

“Maui Releasing the Sun” statue by Shige Yamada at the Kahului Airport in Maui. This work of art refers to the Polynesian myth of the demigod Maui who captured the sun at the summit of Haleakala. After receiving a promise from the sun to traverse the sky more slowly for the benefit of mankind, Maui releases his captive. It may be interpreted as an attempt by man to exercise mastery over his destiny.
