20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
"Mangrove at risk"

This a photo of the sunset over the mangrove forest taken in the eastern area of Tulum. Tulum area used to be a natural pristine paradise still 10 years ago. Massive tourism and hipster market demand is unfortunately having a huge negative impact on this area of Quintana Roo state. The mangrove forest that represents a natural habitat for hundreds of species is unfortunately being destroyed to ensure that massive tourism has a place to sleep, eat, drink and party. The poor tourism management from the authorities and local people (nationals and foreigners) is ending with what the people had came to enjoy: nature. Every month a new hotel claim to offer "the best natural view in Tulum". Question: when there will be only human construction around and no nature left to observe, where next?
